Pryds Drawing in 24timer

Something very unusual happened today: 24timer hit the streets with a drawing of mine on the pages. Newspapers are not all clipart and computer generated designs – once in a while the old colour pencils and chalks come to life. This one is about how we can use the new light bulbs that save electricity, but give a completely different light in the house. See more at 24.dk (it's on page 6-7).

Pryds Creativity Piece in Design Magazine

The fall/winter issue of Design magazine has landed on my doormat – and on doormats of subscribers all over the world. Design is published quarterly by the international organization Society for News Design, and the theme for this special double issue is "Hitting the reset button". Editor Jonathon Berlin asked me to write a piece about rebooting creativity, and I sent him the spread shown above – a package including both text, illustration and page design, with the title, "Six Simple Tricks to Keep Your Pencil Sharp". The spread was kindly included on page 16-17 in the 'reset section', which also feature great articles by Joe Grimm, Vladdo, Sarah Slobin, Roger Black, Mike Swartz and SND President Matt Mansfield. (Click the image to see a larger version).
__The magazine cover (shown right) is a wonderful collage inspired by Rodin's "The Thinker", Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel , and – Apple's reset button.
__One element from my illustration (the pin-up girl, of course, see below) is also used on the contents page; which means that one of the points I make on the spread – finding something to grab the reader's attention – actually works.
__Amazing, by the way, to se my name spelled in three different ways in one magazine (Pyrds, Prdys, and Pryds – the latter being the right way). But then again, nobody's perfect, and I guess it's probably even more difficult to pronounce correctly …

Shit Trademark

Is this really possible? I know Manzoni canned and successfully sold his personal shit back in 1961, but that it should be possible to register shit as such as a trademark is amazing. Saw this on a traffic light just outside my house today (it's our building in the background, actually…)

What to show at "Store Formater"

Hmm. Thought I was going to show this painting at the exhibition "Store Formater" at Galleri Lisse Bruun (opens April 23 – check it out here) – it has a reasonable size for the title (180 x 140 cms) but my wife, that clever thing, told me that this is not your retrospective one-man solo show, so showing a twenty years old painting is just not good enough. Hm. Going to find another one, then, or make a new one. Pretty good painting, though, don't you think?

India Flint's workshops

Our good friend in Australia, the Botanical Alchemist India Flint, has released additions to the programme for her workshops scheduled in the near and not so near future. If working with textiles and/or dying felt with ecoprint colours is somethng that appeals to you, please read on as we bring you India's latest newsletter:

Greetings from the driest state on the driest continent where it seems to have forgotten that it ought to be Autumn and all we seem to have here are dancing dustbunnies. Thank goodness for workshops and wandering as it means I am able to enjoy green leafy goodness elsewhere, if not at home!
__It's been a hugely busy teaching year in which I've had the delight of seeing several students return for second and third helpings - it's wonderful to see their work developing. [mind you my sceptical children mutter that it's either a huge compliment or that it says something about the quality of the teaching in that it needs so much reinforcing...ah well]
__For those keen to cross paths with the peripatetic alchemist, here are a few new options...

A possible workshop is plotted [at ridiculously short notice] for Belgium on April 29 & 30 this year. this has occurred because family matters take me to London in that month. The London workshop [April 25 & 26] has already filled.

In addition to the range of workshops listed on [surprise!] the workshops page of my website and the odd snippet on the news page ['something in the air'] I am planning a series of retreats.

In December [1-3] there will be a three-day felt-dye retreat at Crockett Cottage Studio in Mansfield in the beautiful Victorian High Country. It's a wonderful time of year to be there - you'll have to find your own accommodation in the area but eleven o'clockish nibbles, lunches and afternoon teas will be provided. For three days we'll make, embellish and dye felt using that match-made-in-heaven...wool & eucalyptus.

In March 2010 there will be a four-day retreat on the Coromandel Coast of New Zealand based at the Indigo Bush Studios. Register your interest with me early...it's a fantastic region with abundant and varied flora so the dyepots are likely to reveal new magic. There's a broad range of accommodation locally so participants should be able to find something that suits tastes and budgets. It has the added bonus of being near a beach where a hot river bubbles up through the sands at low tide...let's hope there's a low tide when we have time to relax...

Have a safe and Happy Easter [or Feast of Cheeses if you're simply celebrating Spring somewhere]
best wishes
