World Press Photo Exhibition in Copenhagen

From the official opening af World Press Photo 08 in Copenhagen, October 30, 2008.

World Press Photo 08
has reached Copenhagen on its tour around the world. The winners of the world's largest and most prestigious contest for photography are shown in "Pressen", the old printing hall of JP/Politkens Hus, which forms the perfect background for an exhibition of press and documentary photography.
__5.019 photographers from 125 countries entered a total of 80.536 images for the 51th competition, organized by the independent, non-profit organization based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where World Press Photo was founded in 1955. The jury gave prizes in 10 theme categories to 59 photographers of 23 nationalities. The only Scandinavian winner this year is Erik Refner of Berlingske Tidende, Denmark, who won 1st Prize in the Sports Features Stories category – for a series of portraits showing marathon runners under the shower, just after finishing the race.
__The jury selected a color image of the UK photographer Tim Hetherington as World Press Photo of the Year 2007. The picture was taken 16 September 2007 and shows a US soldier resting at "Restrepo" bunker, named after a soldier from his platoon who was recently killed by insurgents.
